Some editors have lost their sense of balance over Donald Trump

Some newspaper editors, the News Letter excluded, are getting emotional about the US presidential election and writing hyperbole.

There was an example in the editorial of a major Dublin newspaper on October 28.

It reads, “Time will soon tell whether his (President Trump) most unforgivable failing with voters was his unwillingness to take seriously the most acute domestic challenge his country has faced in recent history.”

While I accept that Covid is a very serious issue, journalists need to be proportionate and maintain a sense of balance as there are other important issues equally, if not more important.

I therefore disagree with the word “most” used in the heading and twice in the sentence in the last paragraph of the editorial, quoted above.

It should be borne in mind that during President Trump’s term of office, he endeavoured to tackle head-on the horrific abortion epidemic in the US (and elsewhere) which runs to many millions of terminations.

Also, during President Trump’s time in office, we have not had a catastrophic nuclear war which any thinking person knows is all too possible.

The editorial writer should be grateful that he/she was alive to compose the editorial as it was within President Trump’s competence to press the nuclear button and blow us all into kingdom come.

That he didn’t is a good thing and we should all be grateful to be alive, including editorial writers.
