Weanling calves to 268 pence per kilo at Rathfriland Co-Op

A Dromore farmer sold a 168k Lim at £450 or 268p/k. A Cabra farmer sold a 258k Ch at £690 or 267p/k. An Annaclone farmer sold a 251k lot at £670 or 267p/k and a further two weighing 270k at £700 each or 259p/k. A Kilkeel farmer sold a 202k Ch at £475 or 235p/k. Dropped calves sold to £360 for a Hereford bull from Annalong and the same price for two BB heifers from Katesbridge. Newry farmer: FCK bull at £355. Annaclone farmer: £305 for a Hereford bull calf. 67 heifers sold to £1115 for a Ch from Rathfriland with others at £1035, £1025, £1025, £1025 etc. Bullocks cleared up to £1145 twice for two Angus bulls from Rathfriland with a 570k lot at £1065. Suckler cows sold to £1400 for a Portadown farmer.

Housewife’s Choice sells for £2350 at Rathfriland C-Op show and sale

Some high prices were recorded at Monday night’s Christmas show and sale. The top price was £2350 was paid to Philip Bailie for his first prize Belgium Blue heifer which was also awarded the Housewife’s Choice. This heifer weighed 630k and was bought by Milestone Supermarket, Rathfriland. Overall champion was Shane Doyle’s first prize Limousin bullock weighing 836k at £1800 which was sold to Primestock Meats. The reserve champion was Mark King’s Charolais heifer 664k at 1750 sold to Primestock Meats. The proceeds from this animal went to Cancer Focus. Other high prices included, Mrs E Bell, first prize Belgium Blue steer, 846k at £1600 and first prize Charolais steer 746k at £1520. Malachy McGrath, 766k Charolais steer at £1480. Courtney Dodds, 674k Charolais steer at £1430. David Dodds, 688k Charolais at £1410. Philip Herron, 562k at £1260. Weanlings sold to £1140 for 472k Angus from Ballyward Estates. A 282k Limousin from Jonathan Davidson at £810 and 252k lot at £850 from James Gordon. Oliver O’Hare sold 462k Belgium Blue at £1020. Fat cows topped at £1750 for 802k lot from Trevor Dodds. There were 16 fat cows entered into the sale and they averaged £1045 each.

An entry of 1265 sheep included 1150 lambs selling to £88 per head for 27.7k from Armagh. There was very little change in price on the week. 30k from Ballyward sold at £87. 28.5k from Downpatrick sold at £86. Several pens of 27k sold at £85. Rathfriland farmer: 22.5k at £78.50. Dromore farmer: 18.5k at £67.50.
