Co Londonderry-based vet recruitment platform The Vet Service have added two new members of staff in the last year, with plans for six more recruits over the next two years.

Despite the unsettled economic period, the digital platform for the vet industry continues to grow in popularity and have been able to recruit staff to help manage their workflow.

Founded by veterinarian Edwin Taylor, the idea for the business came about after he realised that practices were finding it increasingly difficult to find suitable vets, which ultimately led him to create the specialist digital jobs platform.

The Coleraine company’s focus is utilising their digital technology to streamline vet practice staffing requirements, connecting these organisations with candidates in the UK, Ireland and internationally. They have grown quickly, having successfully gained a number of new corporate and independent supply contracts in the UK and Ireland as well as New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

The Vet Service’s success has been supported by Invest NI, with their knowledge of international business vital in the company’s rapid expansion since launching in 2016.

Helping veterinarians find work abroad and providing them with ongoing support has been a popular part of their service, which has – like many international businesses - been negatively affected this year with global travel having been curtailed. Although new client gains have declined during the coronavirus pandemic, the company is still looking to consolidate their existing business profile with two new additions to their team in the last 12 months.

The company has much more planned expansion ahead, having recently launched a new online vet webinar platform where vets can receive vital CPD courses from accredited speakers. This online service means that veterinary professionals can receive accredited professional development from anywhere in the world, with expert speakers covering a range of important topics in the industry.

Ed explained: “We initially had larger expansion plans, which were unfortunately curtailed due to coronavirus, but we are still thankful to be fully operational and delighted to be able to add two new members to the team. This will leave us well placed for further growth as we move forward.

“We are continually on the lookout for special talent and if anyone who is keen to be introduced to a flexible, well remunerated work environment with skills in IT, recruitment or the veterinary fields we are always looking to add to our growing team.

“We are always delighted to be able to invest in local Northern Irish talent, and personally I have always been a big believer that we have an outstanding workforce on our doorstep that just needs to be able to be given the chance to shine on an international stage. Of course, being a digital business, we are able to hire remote workers and encourage applications from people from different countries and backgrounds.

“The people who are part of our business are the main driver in our success, but we have also had critical advice and guidance from InvestNI on our road to securing key international business.”
